Recently Denmark announced rather noisy that border controls are being re-introduced! I bet the government would opt that Denmark were an island like Britain, so that they could anyway scrutinize ferries, passengers (on what criteria?) as well as merchandise.
In other words we just live the rewind of the European Union, the Schengen Treaty and the freedom of movement within Europe. As I don't live in Denmark I don't understand why the Danish think that all woes enter their country from Germany. I think that the best would be to have a look what happens in a "normal" European hub like Luxembourg:
You may think that the jam is due to the snow. Yes and no! People who commute daily from France, Belgium or Germany to Luxembourg can assure you that the density is the same! The only difference is that their cars drive at 50 km/h! Can any logical person imagine what kind of controls can be introduced under these circumstances? Even EU-Neutral Switzerland understood that insisting that we live in the 50's, when cars where almost as expensive as yachts and hence traffic analogous, is rather pointless.
On the other hand, Danish authorities harass Danish citizens, legitimate residents and other Europeans who just enter their country to spend some money. Sure even in a Free-Trade and Customs-Union zone, like the European "Union", there are some limits on how much alcohol one is allowed to carry for personal use. But pretending that these controls are meant to stop buggers is hypocrite. The Danish government is not chasing some -questionably- thousands of Euros per month, but wants to prove that their immigration policy has changed. What a strange way to do it!
That's why this blog is about politics, not about criticism. Of course every article needs a thesis. But every thesis taken herein is not dogmatic and always open in sincere and civilized dialogue.
To my view, if the Danish people want to change the form of the society, this is not done by spasmodic actions like the on taken near the German border.They should discuss first on their own what they want to do with the immigrants and how many non-European of them they plan still to accept. Stopping commuters and travelers looking in people's trunks is tasteless and fruitless.
Last -but not least- Denmark is surrounded by the sea, where it derives most its wealth. The sea and the associated merchant marine activities are not and cannot be bounded by the EU. These activities contribute to a large extend to Danish GDP and give some distinctive advantages to the Danish economy. Would Denmark take the same measure, if it were surrounded by land like Hungary or Luxembourg ?
